Dale Keith Johnson

Dale Keith Johnson

Dale Keith Johnson, 17 , son of Mr.and Mrs. L.K. (Bill) Johnson, Lincoln High senior, was killed May 22, 1962,  when his motorcycle he had purchased only minutes earlier skidded out of control on the rain swept street at 10th E near E Garfield.

The cycle skidded into the southbound lane and under the wheels of an oncoming oil truck. Dale was dead on arrival at Harborview Hospital. The speedometer on the motorcycle registered only 5.9 miles.

Dale was co-chief of the student fire department at Lincoln High, a life Scout, and an active member of the youth group at Central Presbyterian Church.

He was an ardent coin collector, a hobby he became interested in while attending Hamilton Junior High, Dale was slated to take an active part in the Pacific Northwest Coin Convention opening in Seattle that day.

Dale had taken the exams at the UW for applications to the Air Force Academy and was one of 11 listed to apply. He had written to the Aeronautical Division in WA DC., concerning the Space Conference held in Seattle recently, and had been invited to attend all three days of the conference as their guest.

Another of Dale's projects was a display board of the different types of Skipper Pins sold each year to support Seattle's Seafair. It had come to his attention that even the Seattle Chamber of Commerce did not have a complete set and his intention was to present one to them.

Dale and a friend were planning a motorcycle trip to Mexico before starting Highline Junior College in this Fall.
